A tusker created panic among the people after it blocked Haliyal – Dandeli road on Tuesday for more than one hour.
The tusker had come in search of the water and was found on the outskirt of Haliyal few days ago. On Tuesday it arrived on the main road and blocked it. Many people who were travelling on the road in their vehicles panicked. But the tusker did not cause any damage. The area falls within Kali Tiger reserve area.
The officials of the forest department arrived on the scene and kept a watch on the tusker. After lot of effort the officials succeeded in sending it back into the forest. The officials said that the streams and the ponds in the forest have dried due to the heat. The wild animals are entering the human inhabitation in search of the water. Though the forest department has made arrangement for the drinking water for the wild animals by creating artificial tanks that is not en for them the officials said.
Last year too a tusker had roamed in the main roads of Haliyal town. The residents of the town have urged the forest officials to make appropriate food and water arrangement to the wild animals to keep them away from the human inhabitation.
