To end the water scarcity in the Krishna basin area every year, the state government is ready to enter in to a treaty with Maharashtra government to find a long lasting solution, said D. K. Shivakumar water resource minister.
He was addressing the public representatives of Belagavi, Bagalkot and Vijayapur districts in the officer of Karnataka Irrigation Board office in Belagavi on Monday to find a solution to the sharing of Krishna river water with Maharashtra.
Shivakumar said that the Maharashtra government has sent a proposal to share 4 TMC of the water from Krishna river every year. The Karnataka government is open to discuss the issue which would solve the problems of people of both the states. Our consent to hold the discussion over the issue will be immediately conveyed to the Maharashtra government through the Chief Secretary of the state.
Till now the Maharashtra government was releasing water by charging money for it. But now it has sent a proposal of water sharing. We will act positively, Minister said. He said that the final decision will be taken after weighing the pros and cons. Now the drinking water scarcity is high in the Krishna basin area. We request the Maharashtra government to release 4 TMC of water on the humanitarian ground. People should use this water only for the drinking purpose. Police HESCOM and irrigation department officials will take strict action against those who violate it, Shivakumar said.
