The forest department is creating awareness among the farmers to grow more bamboo in their land which would enhance their income, said Satish Jarkiholi, forest minister.
Addressing a seminar jointly arranged by the Karnataka Forest department and the National Bamboo Mission at Suvarna Soudha on Saturday. The seminar was about the bamboo Production and entrepreneurship.
Satish said that ‘he has taken the note that the Belagavi district has increased its bamboo production. The government will encourage it. Compared to the other crops Bamboo is more profitable he said. Different species of the bamboo will be recommended for different areas depending on the need. Bamboo is being used in more than 1500 works. Farmers should avail its benefit he said.
Lakshmi Hebbalkar MLA said that bamboo is being used as a medicine and a good fodder for the cattle. It can be easily grown and farmers should concentrate on this she said.
Additional Conservator of Forest R K Shrivatsava spoke and explained the benefits provided to the bamboo growers by the union and state governments. If famers grow bamboo in their own land, then government would provide subsidy up to Rs. 50k he said.
