Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha constituency recorded the 74.07% of the voting according the initial reports by the election Commission. It is just an initial estimation final polling may go up to 75% , according to K. Harish kumar Deputy Commissioner.
Yellapur recorded the highest percentage of votes that is 77.5% followed by Sirsi (74.35%), Haliyal (72%), Kumta (70.66%), Kittur (69.12%), Khanapur (69%), Kumta (70.66%), Karwar (68%) and Bhatkal (65%). This turnout is one3 of the highest turnouts in the constituency.
Interestingly by 5 pm 82% of the physically challenged (PwD) voters cast their votes. The district administration had made arrangement like transportation and wheel chair to the physically challenged voters. M. Roshan, CEO of Uttara Kannada Zilla Panchayat said that the SVEEP activities have given desired results in the constituency.
Barring minor incidents the voting was by and large peaceful. The polling was brisk in the urban areas of the constituency in the morning while it picked up in the rural areas in the evening. By 10 am the percentage of the voting was 22.22% and by 1.00 pm it was 39.87% and reached to 53.48% by 3.30 pm. By 5 Pm it was 65.58%.
Anant kumar Hegde, BJP candidate and union minister casted his vote at Mahalingappa Bhuma high school at Sirsi whereas JDS candidate Anand Asnotikar cast his vote in St. Michael convent Karwar. Revenue minister R. V Deshpande casted his vote at Haliyal. Both Anant kumar Hegde and Anand Asnotikar exuded confidence that the victory will be theirs. Karwar MLA Roopali Naik cast her vote at Chendiya village in Karwar and former MLA Satish Sail cast his vote at Majali.
First time in the history of the Uttara Kannada Congress is out of race and non-existent JDS is taking on the BJP. It is to be seen whether Congress party can successfully transfer its votes to JDS in this election.
