Activists Oppose the Proposal to join Kali, Malaprabha and Ghataprabha rivers

Pragativahini News, Karwar
The Karunada Rakshana Vedike (KRV) has warned the agitation against the effort of some Sugar mill owners and the Pontiffs from Belagavi district to diver the flow of Kali river towards Belagavi.
Addressing the media here on Monday, N. Datta President of KRV said that the it is shocking that some Belagavi based organisations are trying to divert Kali River from Uttara Kannada and join it with Ghataprabha and Malaprabha rivers there.
Kali river is the place of biodiversity and is the growing place of many shells and fishes. If we disturb this river, then there will be imbalance in the ecology. They are out to create another problem like Yettinahole’ he alleged.
These who demanding the diversion of river because they think it is waste of river water to allow it to join the sea. The salinity of the sea water will go up and entire fishes and plants in the sea will die. Kali River flows through the central Western Ghats which is biodiversity area and declared heritage spot by UNESCO. Kali passes through the Kali Tiger reserve and Joida reserved forest. The western ghat brings monsoon to India. If we disturb the ecology the entire India will go without rains and the wild animals depending on Kali will become extinct, Datta alleged. This river has five dams which produce the electricity. Its water is being used in the coolant of Kaiga Nuclear Power station. If the river is diverted, then the state will suffer by the acute power shortage. The fishermen who are deepening on the Kali river for the fishing activities will be rendered jobless, he added
A meeting of the religious heads and environmentalists of Uttara Kannada will be called to discuss the issue soon. The scientists too will be invited. A plan will be chalked out for the agitation against the move to divert the Kali river, he said.
Data said that it is unscientific to divert the flow of river in the sensitive western ghat area. River Kali which originates at Diggi forest in Western Ghats of Joida taluk in Uttara Kannada joins Arabian Sea at Karwar. He said that some pontiffs and the politicians who are the owners of supermalls in Belagavi, Bagalkote and Vijayapura district are acting with the selfishness and it has nothing to help the farmers. The sugarcane grown in Belagavi district needs lot of water and if the Kali river is diverted then the sugar mill owners are the beneficiaries as they get sugarcane throughout the year, Datta alleged.
