Farmers upset over the bid to take over the irrigation land to construct SWMU

Pragativahini News, Belagavi
The efforts of Belagavi district administration to take over the fertile irrigation land -which is the main source of earning for hundreds of farmers – to build a Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) has irked the farmers of Halaga village.

For last several years there is a controversy over building of SWMU in Belagavi. But the selection of Halaga village has raised many eye brows and people do not know what yardstick has been applied to select this area.

Local MLA Lakshmi Hebbalkar has opposed it since beginning after that district in charge minister had assured her to form a committee to find a solution. But the officials tried to take over the land on Tuesday without any prior information and had returned after the local famers opposed it. On Wednesday officials returned with police force while MLA Lakshmi Hebbalkar was in Bengaluru. Her son Mrunal has led the protest. Police have taken more than 15 persons with Mrunal to the police station. The officials reportedly did not agree to wait till the MLA returns to Belagavi.
About 19 acres of the land has been identified to construct SWMU in the Halaga village which is near to the human inhabitation. The compensation proposed is meagre. Lakshmi had told the officials that it is not proper to build it near the village and Suvarna Vidhanasoudha area. Now she has alleged that some unknown people are behind it and has warned that she will not allow the construction of the SWMU in the area.
