Pragati Media House, Belagavi -ICMR-National Institute of Traditional Medicine (ICMR-NITM) one of the National Institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research, under Department of Health Research (Govt of India), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare organized a “Public Interaction and Outreach Programme” Today.
The event was organized as part of the India International Science Festival which is being celebrated throughout the country. The ‘Open Day’ programme was designed for showcasing the contribution of Indian science and in particular the activities of the
Institute for the people of our country.
The theme for this year’s India International Science Festival is RISEN (Research Innovation, and Science Empowering the Nation). Students, teachers, and the general public were the target audience.
The program consisted of audiovisual shows on the achievements made by ICMR in health research in the country and the contributions of ICMR-NITM Belagavi since its establishment as Regional Medical Research Centre in 2006.
The public were given access to the various laboratories and facilities of the institute where the visitors were explained about the scientific principles of health research, environmental and personal hygiene, and public health issues.
They were also informed as to how the research can lead to innovations that positively impact the society. The visitors were also shown various equipment used in health research, lab-wares, kits and specimens of interest.
They were shown the animal models like zebra-fish that are used in experimentation’s. Various disease-cycles and life-cycles of causative agents were depicted through charts and models. Computer aided tools and Virtual Reality shows were organized to show structures of various proteins.
Facilities for conducting observational studies on various treatment practices through the School of Traditional Medicine was also explained to the visitors. The visitors were taken on a walk-through of the Herbal Garden of Medicinal Plants of the Western Ghats consisting of more than 500 medicinal plants spread over the 25 -acre campus of NITM.
Students, teachers and public also viewed the Museum of Ethnomedicinal Plants of Western Ghats where herbarium, photographs and crude drugs are displayed. The students and teachers also interacted with the scientists of ICMR-NITM working in various disciplines of health sciences.
The event was attended by more than 500 students representing more than 20 schools and colleges in and around the city.
Earlier in the day, the event was formally inaugurated by Dr.M.V.Jali, Director and CEO of
Dr.Prabahakar Kore Hospital, Belagavi in presence of Dr.S.L.Hoti, Director in Charge of ICMR-NITM. Dr. Jali spoke to the scientist and staff about the need of such programme, particularly with the mission to inculcate the spirit of scientific temper among students. During the programme Dr.S.L.Hoti briefed the media and press and interacted with the students urging to make science a ‘Jan andolan’.
