People living in the Krishna river basin are perplexed over the move of the governments of Karnataka and Maharashtra state over the release of water in the Krishna river.
For long time there is the allegation that the Karnataka government is neglecting the interest of the people of Uttara Karnataka. Four district in Krishna basis Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot and Raichur are suffering by the acute shortage of the water. Krishna the life line of these district has dried. People and the cattle are finding it difficult without the drinking water.
The BJP and Congress leaders from these areas had met Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra Chief Minister requesting him to release the water in Krishna river. Maharashtra CM had agreed to release water on the condition that if the Karnataka government releases 2 TMC of water to the areas of Jutt and Solapur taluks from Alamatti dam then the Maharashtra would reciprocate by releasing 2 TMC of the water in Krishna river from Koyna dam.
D. K. Shivakumar, Water resource minister from Karnataka had called a meeting of the public representatives and the officials in Belagavi in this regard and greed to the condition put by Maharashtra. Even of one week of holding this meeting the water is not yet released by Maharashtra government. People Krishna basin are anxiously waiting for the water. People here are perplexed by the attitude of the stat movement. The general feeling here is that the state government is not working wholeheartedly to solve the problem. Till last year the state government had worked honestly to find the solution to the water scarcity in the area. The farmers here are angry and have asked the Chief Minister to work wholeheartedly to solve the problem. The move of the government has again strengthened the feeling of the people that the state government is always have step motherly attitude towards the people of North Karnataka.
When it comes to the issue of River Kaveri all politicians, intellectuals and the film actors act in unison and take on the street. But they keep mum when the issue relates to the North Karnataka, the farmers alleged. They demanded that the state government should act on war footing to solve the problem of drinking water in the region.
