Farmers of Gokak and Mudalagi Taluk protested in Belgaum on Monday, condemning the stand of Water Resources Minister DK Shivakumar, who ordered the release of 1 TMC water from the Hidakal reservoir.Protesters gathered at Kittur Chennamma circle formed a human chain and blocked the road. The protesters came to the Deputy Commissioner’s office in procession submitted a memorandum. The protesters expressed their anger against Minister DK Shivakumar fired and urged the minister to immediately cancel the order.people and the livestock are facing the problem of drinking water. There is a famine in Gokak and Mudalagi taluks. Water should be immediately released to the left and right channel of Ghataprabha river to solve the water problem. For any reason, we will not let the water flow to the Krishna river. It has been reported that water from the Hidkal reservoir will be left into the Krishna River. This would be very unfair to the farmers and the public on the GRBC and GRBC Canals. The farmers warned of the agitation if the water is released into the Krishna river. They demanded that for per day 2000 cusecs of the water (1.15 TMC) be released for five days into to the Ghataprabha river from Hidkal dam they demanded.Speaking to the protesters, ZP member Govind Kopta, farmer leader Ganapati Iligheri, leader Basavantha Kamathi said that the Gokak and Moodalagi taluk are facing severe drinking water problems. In this case, Minister DK Shivakumar’s order to release water from the Hidkal reservoir to the Krishna River is arbitory. Minister DK Shivakumar is making politics of hate in water issue. Let water be released to the Krishna River from the Koyna reservoir in Maharashtra. Only Balachandra Jarakioli, Arabhavi MLA has raised his voice in this connection he said.Hundreds of farmers, including Hidkal Dam Mahamandal President Ashok Khandratti, Arabavi Mandala BJP president Subhash Patil, Gokak TAPCMS president Vitthal Patil, farmer leader Bhimasi Gadadi, Mahadev Thambade, Lakshmana Neelan, Siddappa Hammannu, Ramayya Mutt, Mahadeva Tukkanatti, Subhash Hawadi and Raju Bhairagola, and others participated in the protest.
