ಪ್ರಗತಿವಾಹಿನಿ ಸುದ್ದಿ, ಬೆಳಗಾವಿ : : ಬೆಳಗಾವಿಯ ಹ್ಯಾಂಬೆಲ್ ಅಮೆಚೂರ್ ರೇಡಿಯೋ ಕ್ಲಬ್ ಹವ್ಯಾಸಿ ಸದಸ್ಯರ 50ನೇ ವಾರ್ಷಿಕೋತ್ಸವ ಜನವರಿ 26ರಂದು ನಡೆಯಲಿದ್ದು, ಅದರ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜ. 24 ಮತ್ತು 25 ರಂದು ARSI ಹಿಲ್ ಟಾಪ್ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಗಳು ನಡೆಯಲಿವೆ.

HAM ರೇಡಿಯೋ – ಆವಿಷ್ಕಾರದ ಜಗತ್ತು
“ಹ್ಯಾಮ್ ರೇಡಿಯೋ” ಎಂದು ಜನಪ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಹವ್ಯಾಸಿ ರೇಡಿಯೋ, ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯೇತರ ಸಂವಹನ ಸೇವೆ ಮತ್ತು ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ಹವ್ಯಾಸವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಪರವಾನಗಿ ಪಡೆದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳು ರೇಡಿಯೋ ಸ್ಪೆಕ್ಟ್ರಮ್ ಬಳಸಿ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯವಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಜಾಗತಿಕವಾಗಿ ಸಂವಹನ ನಡೆಸಲು ಅನುವು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.

HAMBEL Amateur Radio Club in association with the Department of Physics, Rani Channamma University, Belagavi is celebrating the 50th year of HAMBEL Club Belagavi on 26th January 2026. ARSI Hill Top contest is arranged on 24th and 25th for Radio Amateurs. An introduction to Amateur Radio (HAM Radio) and technical sessions about Radio and antenna building are arranged at Chigarimala Forest Lodge near Rani Channamma Zoo, Bhutaramanahatti, Belagavi.
HAM Radio – A World of Discovery
Amateur radio, popularly known as “ham radio,” is a non-commercial communication service and technical hobby that enables licensed individuals to communicate locally and globally using the radio spectrum. Unlike social media or cell phones, it operates independently of the internet or commercial infrastructure, relying on physics, radio waves, and the operator’s skill to make contact across neighbourhoods, continents, or even into space. Its a service of self-training, inter-communication, and technical investigations.
Core Purpose and Activities
As defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the service is intended for self-training, intercommunication, and technical investigations.
Emergency Communication: Hams act as a “lifeline” during natural disasters (like earthquakes or hurricanes) when cellular and landline networks fail. In India, they have played vital roles during events such as the 2004 Tsunami and the 2001 Gujarat Earthquake.
Technical Innovation: The hobby encourages building, modifying, and experimenting with antennas and radio equipment. It has historically been a training ground for engineers in telecommunications, aerospace, and IT.
Global Community: Operators engage in “DXing” (contacting distant stations) and “Ragchewing” (casual conversation). Events like Hamfest India or the ARRL Field Day provide social gathering opportunities.
Specialized Modes: Communication ranges from traditional Morse code (CW) to voice (SSB, FM) and modern digital protocols like FT8, which allow communication even under extremely weak signal conditions.
Licensing and Regulation
Because amateur signals can cross international borders, the hobby is strictly regulated.
Government Oversight: National authorities, such as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the U.S. or the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) Wing in India, manage frequency allocations and licensing.
Examinations: Prospective “hams” must pass exams testing knowledge of radio theory, electronics, and local regulations.
Call Signs: Upon licensing, each operator is assigned a unique call sign (e.g., VU2XYZ) to identify themselves during transmissions.
License Class: Many countries offer tiered licenses, such as Restricted and General grades in India, or Technician, General, and Amateur Extra in the U.S., each offering increased frequency and power privileges.
Radio Scouting
Radio Scouting combines the outdoor skills of Scouting with the technical “Air” adventure of Amateur Radio.
Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA): The world’s largest Scouting event, connecting millions of Scouts across the globe annually using Amateur Radio.
JOTA: Connecting millions of Scouts globally through Amateur Radio airwaves.
JOTI: Connecting Scouts via the Internet using various digital platforms. When: Held annually during the third full weekend in October to promote friendship and global citizenship.
Modern Evolution
While often viewed as a “pre-digital” hobby, modern amateur radio integrates with new technologies through EchoLink and AllStarLink, which link radio repeaters via the internet. Amateur satellites (like HAMSAT) and programs like
ARISS—which allows students to talk to astronauts on the International Space Station—keep the hobby at the cutting edge of science and education.
Belagavi and HAM Radio Evolution
HAMBEL Amateur Radio Club is one of the oldest clubs in India. Many HAM Radio Members are activity participating in the Hobby from Belgaum. Notably Manohar Maitri VU2MRM, Prakash Ubrani VU2PNU, Om Prakash VU2KOC, B. R. Joshi VU2BRJ, Manjunath Shinde VU2SMS, Ashok Kulkarni VU2ACK, J.S Galgali VU2EVU, B. G. Hegde VU2BGG, Mahantesh VU3XFH, Jagadish VU3JNM, Vikrant Patil VU2PTM, Prafull Rugi VU2INE, Sai Kumar VU3XXS, Basappa VU2NXM, Kanchan Shinde VU3CXM and Prabha Hegde VU33PT.
Prof. M.A.Hippargai – VU2PAL Legend of Ham Radio
Prof. M.A. Hippargai, affectionately known as Prof. PAL was a legendary ham of India. First Licensed in 1974 and was very active HAM operator all his life.
With Support from members of HAMBEL Amateur Radio Club namely VU2PNU, VU2KOC, VU2BRJ, Chandrashekar Gaddi VU2CKR, Jayant Patil VU2JBP, Baji kaka VU2BAJ, Arbahavi VU2SIV, VU2EXY, he started the daily HAM net(Humble Belgaum Net which was later named as HAMBEL Belgaum net in 1989 on 7052.5Khz later shifted to 7150Khz.
It was his dedication and love for ham radio that he controlled the net for more than 26 years single handedly for one and half hour daily. He was actively handling the net at the age of 86, up to a few weeks before he passed away into eternity.
Prof PAL was a Physics Professor and thought at RL Science Institute, Belgaum where he retired as principle of the college.
