Citizen Forum Urges Centre to Prioritise 9-km Elevated Railway Track for Belagavi
North India getting priority; Southern cities too deserve similar infrastructure, says Forum
Pragativahini News/Belagavi: The Belagavi Citizen Forum has urged the Central and State Governments to accord priority to the proposed 9-km Elevated Railway Track on a viaduct across Belagavi city as a long-term solution to the growing traffic congestion caused by the rapidly increasing population and vehicle density.
The Forum pointed out that several major infrastructure projects of a similar nature have been successfully implemented in various cities across the country. However, there is a growing concern that cities in North India are receiving greater priority, while rapidly developing cities in South India, including Belagavi, are not receiving adequate attention.
Cities such as Kurukshetra, Nagpur and Kanpur have been giving greater emphasis to modern transportation infrastructure. Belagavi too needs a forward-looking and innovative transport solution to address its growing urban challenges, the Forum said.
Not just a railway project, but an investment in Belagavi’s future
The proposed 9-km Elevated Railway Track is not merely an infrastructure project but could become a major step towards creating a future-ready transportation system for Belagavi.
With increasing traffic congestion, rising vehicle numbers and rapid urbanisation, such a project can help ease congestion on major roads, improve public transportation and reduce travel time for citizens.
The project should therefore be viewed not merely as a development work but as an integral part of Belagavi’s long-term urban planning and development strategy, the Forum said.
Political will needed
The Forum said elected representatives must come together and raise a united voice in support of the project. MPs, MLAs and senior political leaders from the State should jointly take up the issue with the Central Government and work towards securing the necessary approvals and financial support.
Strong political advocacy, coupled with public support, can help create the momentum required to move the project forward at both the Central and State Government levels, the Forum said.
Belagavi’s development should not be held back by its geographical location. It is time to take the city to the next level through modern technology, innovative infrastructure and forward-looking urban planning.
The Citizen Forum urged the Central and State Governments to seriously consider the proposed 9-km Elevated Railway Track and initiate the necessary steps for its implementation.
“Belagavi needs faster growth, and traffic congestion should not become a hurdle to its development. The Government must take immediate steps to initiate a visionary project like the Elevated Railway Track,” the Forum said.
