Self-Respect of candidates a causality in this Election?

M. K. Hegde

The preparation is on for the smooth conduct of the Lok Sabha polls-2019 in the country. The first phase of the election is over amid the violence. There is a fierce competition between NDA and UPA to capture the power in Delhi.
Congress is facing election under the leadership of immature politician like Rahul Gandhi. There are thousands of capable leaders in Congress but none of them has the courage to challenge the hegemony of the Gandhi family in the party. So Congress is being forced to contest the elections on its past glory and personal capacity of the candidates contesting in their respective constituency.
But the situation in BJP is entirely different. More than 90% of the candidates are banking on the charisma of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to win the election. The candidate does not matter in the 28 constituencies of Karnataka and it is Modi who matters here. This is nothing but the paradox of the party and mockery of the voters here.
In democracy like India which is based on the Westminster model it is the prerogative of the elected MPs to choose their Prime Minister. Declaring a PM candidate before the election is would set a bad precedent and will not auger well with the democracy like India.
Majority of the sitting BJP MPs who are non-performers are seeking votes in the name of Modi. Let us concede that Modi is one of the best Prime Ministers India has seen. He has a vision and India has good future under his leadership. Though some of the decisions like demonetization, GST has affected the commoners as well as the business community, we can forgive the lapses for the future of India. But the question involved here is of the candidates whom we are going to elect. It is a shameful thing that a MP who cannot present the work done by him before the electorate and seek votes in the name of a Prime Minister is nothing but a disgraceful act. A first time contestant can seek the votes in the name of PM but what about those who are seeking re-election 4th and 5th time? Is it not the defeat of the democracy? If a MP get elected in the name of Modi then what about his self-respect? If such candidates again contest the election and want to get re-elected then it is nothing but the mockery of the democracy.
When someone gets elected for the first time the needs times to understand the procedure and system. But those who have been elected 2-3 times should work for the people without any rider. Name of the party leaders may help them to win the elections but they cannot win the heart of the people. Such victory is not an honorable victory. They lose self-confidence even after their victory in the electoral battle. If an elected representative fails to provide the justice to his people it is a defeat of the democracy.
