Anant kumar Hegde, BJP candidate from Uttara Kannada recorded his sixth time but this time with a record margin. His victory margin is highest in Karnataka it is said. He secured 68.15% of total polled votes (1149609) and his nearest rival Anand Asnotikar has polled 26.56% of the votes.
On Thursday even BJP workers were stunned by the victory margin. Anant kumar defeated his nearest JDS rival Anand Asnotikar by the margin of 479649 votes. Anant kumar 786042 and Asnotikar polled 306393 Of the 13 candidates contested from Uttara Kannada 11 have lost their security deposit. BSP candidate Sudhakar Keera Joglekar secured only 7195 votes. There were 16017 NOTA votes polled in the constituency.Anant kumar won by the highest margin in Karnataka according to BJP sources. Anant kumar a hard-core Hindutwa protagonists had stirred controversy many a times in the past and had embarrassed the party. This week BJP had issued showcase notice to him after he made some unsavoury remarks against Mahatma Gandhi and had defended Nathuram Godse, assassin of Gandhi.
Despite all his controversial remarks and allegation that he did nothing for Uttara Kannada he has won with thumping margin by riding on the Modi Wave. Even in the 3215 postal ballots Anant kumar hot 2831 votes while Asnotikar polled only 263. Rest of the votes were polled in favour of other candidates.
In Karwar assembly constituency which is known as the bastion of Asnotikar Anant kumar was polled 113135 votes while Asnotikar polled just 37349 votes and Anant kumar led by 75786 votes. In all other assembly segment the result was not difficult. From the first round itself Anant kumar established lead over Anand and by completion of fourth round it was unassailable.
The animosity among the JDS and Congress leaders is behind the setback the JDS sources said. Many JDS leaders of Uttara Kannada blamed Revenue minister R V Deshpande for the debacle. BJP had established lead of over 40000 votes in Haliyal constituency represented by Deshpande. Of eight assembly segments BJP led in all from the round one of counting.
Congress leaders backstabbed us. The selfish politics of Deshpande is the main reason for this defeat, said a JDS leader. No Congress public representative was found anywhere near the counting station. JDS leaders who were there were found leaving the counting centre even when the third round of the counting was in progress. Anand Asno0tikar himself was in Goa and had not arrived at the counting station.
Anant kumar while thanking voters said that the reason behind the victory was the good work done by Modi led government in the last five years. He said he would continue to work in favour of the people of Uttara Kannada in the coming days.
49 years old Anant kumar Hegde represented Uttara Kannada constituency in 1996, 1998, 2004, and 2009, again in 2014. He lost to Margaret Alva, former union minister once (in 1999) by a slender margin. The margin of victory has surpassed all his previous victory records.
