*Human Relationships Are Breaking Down in the Age of Technology: Channaraj Hattiholi Expresses Concern*

Pragativahini News, Benakanahalli (Belagavi): It is our collective responsibility to provide love, peace and dignity to senior citizens who have devoted most of their lives to securing their children’s future. However, human relationships are gradually breaking down in today’s technology-driven era, MLC Channaraj Hattiholi expressed concern.

He was speaking after inaugurating the silver jubilee celebrations of Gharakul Old Age Home, run by Swami Chhaya Pratishthan, at Benakanahalli on Tuesday.

“We often speak about achievements, development, wealth and success in life. But the true prosperity of a society should be measured by how respectfully it treats its senior citizens. Elders are not merely the wealth of our families; they are the invaluable repository of our society’s experience. The ups and downs they have witnessed, the challenges they have faced and the values they have imparted serve as guiding lights for future generations,” he said.

“In my view, service is not merely about providing financial assistance. Spending time with senior citizens is also service. Holding an elderly person’s hand, exchanging a few affectionate words and extending support whenever they need it are all forms of service. Our elders are essential to guiding society in the right direction. They are our invaluable asset,” Channaraj Hattiholi said.

He said that he and his associates extend whatever support they can to Gharakul Old Age Home every year. “I consider it not as assistance, but as our duty. We will fulfil the responsibility entrusted to us. This is divine work, and it gives us immense satisfaction,” he said.

Recalling the journey of the institution, he said Gharakul began its service in 2001 in a small rented house in Tilakwadi with just three senior citizens. Today, it has grown into a place of support and care for many elderly people in the spacious premises at Benakanahalli, which is a remarkable achievement.

“Caring for senior citizens is not a burden. It reflects our culture, gratitude and humanity,” he said.

He appreciated the facilities provided at Gharakul, including accommodation, food, healthcare, medical check-ups, meditation, walks, recreation and celebrations of festivals, all aimed at ensuring a peaceful and comfortable life for the residents. He particularly commended the institution’s concern for the health and well-being of senior citizens.

Spending time with elders is the greatest gift: Sachin Sabnis

Industrialist Sachin Sabnis, who attended the programme as an honoured guest, said that 25 years of dedicated service by Gharakul was no small achievement. Serving senior citizens is equivalent to serving God. Elders are a treasure trove of knowledge, and their experiences show us the right path in life.

“They do not expect anything extraordinary from us. All they seek is a little of our time and companionship,” he said.

He observed that today’s youth face considerable work pressure and numerous responsibilities, which often leave them with little time to spend with senior citizens. He also spoke about his association with Gharakul over the years.

Silver Jubilee Committee Chairman Anil Potdar presided over the programme. He recalled the establishment of Gharakul, the sacrifices behind its inception and its journey over the past 25 years.

A message sent by MLA Laxmi Hebbalkar was read out on the occasion. The souvenir published to mark the silver jubilee was released by the dignitaries.

Vaishnavi Nadagouda rendered the welcome song. Swami Chhaya Pratishthan President Rajiv Potdar briefed the gathering on the activities of Gharakul Old Age Home. Shaila Chate and Chintamani Gramopadhye introduced the guests. Lakshmi Potdar compered the programme, while Secretary N.B. Deshpande proposed the vote of thanks.

Cultural programmes were held thereafter.
