Pragativahin News, Belagavi
Under the program, National Mission on Education through ICT by MHRD, Govt. of India and in association with NITK Surathkal, KLS Gogte Institute of Technology (GIT), Belagavi inaugurated the Nodal Center of Virtual Labs on Friday.
Shivashankar Hiremath was the chief guest and Shri. Gautam Prabhu, Nishan Shetty and K. K. Prabhakaran were the guests of honors.
Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Shivashankar Hiremath said that, Virtual laboratories are becoming an integral part of science and technical curriculum – they enable students to discover and work with key concepts. With the rapid growth of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), virtual laboratories are used as an alternative or to supplement to the physical or real laboratories. Virtual laboratories have been developed in a number of engineering and scientific disciplines using a variety of simulation techniques. While explaining about the importance of the virtual labs he told that, virtual laboratories can be used at ‘anytime, anyplace, on-line learning’ world of engineering education. They are also increasingly being used to supplement the traditional learning modes. The logistics of tailoring a real laboratory, particularly when dealing with a large number of students, is a big problem to universities. The requirements for space, instrumentation and human support are also high. The virtual laboratories are more suited to handle a large number of students. Also the cost to set-up a virtual laboratory is very low compared to a real laboratory. Operating and maintenance costs are also very low compared to real laboratories. Unlike real laboratories, virtual laboratories do not require daily maintenance and expertise to function effectively. Neither are replacements are required for damage due to malfunction. Finally he urged students and faculty to take use of this Nodal Center and also informed that this Nodal center is open for all the surrounding colleges.
After the inauguration a workshop on Experimental Learning through Virtual Lab was conducted to the students and faculty. Principal Dr. A.S.Deshpande gave presidential remarks, Nodal Center coordinator Dr. M.M.Math welcomed the gathering, Dr.J. K. Kittur proposed vote of thanks, Prof. G. N. Maranholkar introduced the guests and Prof. Roopa Rao was the host for the function.
